Journal 3 from Gravity Falls
Production of a prop Journal 3 from Gravity Falls made in 2013, long before the official journal was released. Made with love with aged and handsewn and handdrawn pages from episode screenshots
The production of the of the book
I began with a book from the thrift store
I removed the pages and prepped the book by gluing tissue paper to the book to give it a weathered leather look. I also added a couple pieces of yarn under the tissue paper to give the spine the raised gold areas
I painted the cover with red and gold paint and then painted it with a layer of Mod Podge
The pages were soaked in different solutions of tea and coffee to give the pages different coloration
I then baked the pages in the oven to dry them
I then sewed the pages in the center (about 5-7 pages at a time) to create the mini-booklets that became the contents
The booklets were then glued together in the center using a piece of Canvas (pictured). After the glue dried, the pages were glued into the spine of the book, gluing the pages to each side of the spine to seamlessly incorporate them
The hand and edges were sculpted out of Paperclay
They were dried in the oven and sanded for smoothness. I then painted them with glossy Mod Podge and spray painted it with metallic gold paint. after that I painted in the 3 and edge divots with black paint and rubbed a paper towel with light paint on it followed with a clean paper towel to give it an antiqued look
The Sculpted pieces were glued down to the cover with E-6000 and then additional detailing was added with an X-acto knife and Sharpie

This journal prop was made several years before the official journal was released. The pages were hand drawn and lettered based on screenshots from episodes of the show.
